The ICT RS485/RS232 radio bridge replaces a serial cable with a
radio link in the 868 MHz band. Two devices form a transparent bridge: whatever enters the
RS485 or RS232 interface on one side comes out unchanged on the other side.
The connected devices do not notice anything — no drivers,
no protocol adaptation, no change to the controller.

Typical application: a Modbus RTU link to inverters, meters or sensors
where trenching for the cable would cost more than the two bridges. The
IP65 enclosure allows outdoor installation.

Two devices are always required for a radio link.

Why this bridge

  • Nothing gets lost: Corrupted data is repeated automatically
until it arrives. The device bridges short radio interference without loss.
  • 32 kB buffer per direction with adjustable hold time —
the buffer absorbs data peaks, outdated data is discarded instead of being delivered
    late.
  • Always encrypted: The radio link always works with
AES-128, there is no unencrypted operation. For confidential installations
a custom key can be assigned.
  • Modbus RTU with telegram mode — telegrams stay contiguous
    and are not split up.
  • Freely configurable via a WLAN web interface (German/English)
or via USB terminal: baud rate, format, radio rate, channel and addresses can be
changed at any time, without tools and without a firmware update.
  • Range as required: radio data rate from 250 kBd for maximum
throughput down to 4.8 kBd for maximum range, plus a robust mode with
    error correction.

Ready to use ex works

Both devices of a pair are preconfigured so that they communicate with each other
immediately after the supply voltage is applied. Adapting them to your application —
baud rate, data format, RS485 or RS232 — takes only a few minutes via the
web interface: press the button, connect to the WLAN ICT-Funkbridge,
open http://192.168.42.1 in the browser.

Throughput

Measured sustained throughput of the radio link:

Radio data rate / mode Sustained throughput Carries sustained serial load up to
250 000 Bd, one direction approx. 7 kB/s 57600 Bd continuously occupied
250 000 Bd, both directions simultaneously approx. 7.5 kB/s 2 × 28800 Bd continuously occupied
250 000 Bd with robust mode approx. 6 kB/s 57600 Bd continuously occupied
100 000 Bd, one direction approx. 5 kB/s 38400 Bd continuously occupied

Typical fieldbus applications occupy the line only to a fraction of its capacity — there,
115200 Bd and more are no problem as long as the average data volume stays below the
sustained throughput.
